Reading and Writing (ELA):
Poetry is used throughout all units.
Unit 1: The focus is the launching of Reader's and Writing Workshop! Children will learn routines for the classroom, concepts of print, library skills, book handling, turn and talk routine, review decoding skills, learn new HF words, write words and sentence patterns and an overall development of independent reading strategies.
Unit 2: Learning reading strategies to solve unknown words. Students will continue to learn reading comprehension strategies.
The Power of Being Kind Unit: Students will learn about different genres, just right books and story elements. Children will also be focusing on personal narratives, writing with a clear beginning, middle and ending and deepening their understanding of the writing process.
The Fox's Foray Unit: Students will learn elements of a folktale and how to give their opinion on characters. They will write their opinion and use evidence to prove their idea. Students will also learn what a debate is and test their ideas with one another.
Patriotic Symbols: Students will learn how to take notes and write an informational piece. Children will learn about what a symbol is and symbols that represent our country.
Habitat Unit: Students will learn how to ask a question about a topic, research and write an informational piece citing different sources. Children will learn how to conduct a formal research paper and present.
Central Message Unit: Children will learn that author's write with a purpose and how to determine central message or theme in a text.
EnVision Math:
Unit 1: We are reviewing writing numbers. Our new topics are beginning addition through the part, part, whole model. We also are learning how to solve word problems.
Unit 2: Students will learn how to fluently add and subtract within 10. Some strategies that will be utilized will be counting on, using doubles to add, counting back to subtract, using a number line and using counters.
Unit 3: This unit focuses on using doubles, doubles plus 1, doubles plus 2 and an open number line to solve problems. Children will also learn a variety of strategies that will help them solve word problems.
Unit 4: Students will practice subtraction facts to 20. Children will learn which strategies are best to use with a variety of problems.
Unit 5: The focus of this unit is working with addition and subtraction equations. Children will be learning how to find the unknown numbers, adding problems with three addends, making true/false equations and solving word problems.
Unit 6: This unit focuses on collecting data, sorting data and organizing data with tally marks. Children will also learn how to read and interpret information on a chart and picture graph.
Unit 7: Unit 7 focuses on extending the counting sequence. Students will learn and apply patterns in 10s, 5s, 2s and ones. Children will also learn how to count on an open number line.
Unit 8: The focus is understanding place value. Children will practice making, writing and representing numbers that have one digit and two digits.
Unit 9: Children will learn how to compare numbers using the words less than, greater than, more and less. Students will practice this skill with one and two digit numbers.
Unit 10: The focus is using models and strategies to add tens and ones. Children will use hundreds charts, open number lines and manipulatives to solve problems.
Unit 11: Students will use models and strategies to subtract tens.
Unit 12: Unit 12 focuses on measurement. Students will compare and order objects by length and use units to measure objects.
Unit 13: This unit focuses on time. Students will learn hour, half hour and how to solve word problems with time.
Unit 14 and 15: These units go hand in hand. They focus on shapes (2D and 3D) and fractions (equal parts, halves, thirds, quarters).
Science and Social Studies:
1. Students are focusing on the seasons, weather patterns, creating a positive classroom community, becoming a good friend and holidays.
2. Children are also learning how to think like a scientist!
3. First graders will begin to learn about light in our world.
4. Students will learn about our town, state, state facts, our country and map skills.
